Baby Scrapbook Layout: On the Move
January 25, 2010 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment

This baby scrapbook layout uses our sketch #32 and some very cute little characters from Erica Hite’s Bouncing Baby Girl scrapbook collection from ScrapGirls.
I loved this story from Isabella: She received an email from her daughter a few months back with a photo of her grand daughter lying across her cot, and the excited exclamation, “I didn’t put her down that way!”
A couple of hours later more photographs arrived showing her grand daughter had turned right round and was lying with her head at the bottom of the cot. The first indication that Emily Joy was on the move – when no one is looking, of course!
Using Melissa Renfro’s Perpetual Calendar
January 15, 2010 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment
I made our family calendars this year using Melissa Renfro’s perpetual calendar, a digital layout template from ScrapGirls.
I found it very easy to use with a large selection of layout plans, some fun little images denoting birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, and ready to use grids for each month. I just had to select the photographs I wanted to use and drop them into the templates, then make sure I chose the correct monthly grid and it was ready!
As all the layers are there, for some months I even swapped out some elements from the layout to either add or subtract an image, depending on how many I required for that month. As I frequently put a photo of the person(s) celebrating in any given month the number present did not always coincide with what I needed.
I chose to go with a simple, uncluttered, white background that I could write on, but you could use patterned paper as Melissa has in her own examples below.

It is not too late for you to have a go if you need a calendar for yourself, a family member or as a gift. It’s quick and easy. The most time consuming part is choosing your photographs! Melissa Renfro’s perpetual calendar is called ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates – Calendar: Perpetual – Painted – quite a mouthful but it works beautifully … and being a digital download you can get started in a few minutes!
Scrapbooking Sketch # 32
January 13, 2010 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment
Here is the new scrapbooking sketch idea from ScrapbookingGems.com.
A scrapbooking sketch, or scrapbooking template, is an idea to use to get you started on a new layout. Sometimes we just can’t think what to do and it can be a spur to our creativity.
We try to help with suggestions on how to use the sketch and we turn the sketch around for you to save you hurting your neck as you try to imagine what it will look like upside down, turned 90 degrees or flipped over or back to front. (Don’t get concerned when you see the results of these actions as we’ve simply used the editor to do this and not made new layouts for each, so you’ll see the title upside down and back to front, too!)
Christmas Dreaming Layout
January 7, 2010 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment

This Christmas Dreaming layout uses free scrapbooking embellishments from ScrapGirls and Photoshop Elements. As a regular ScrapGirls newsletter reader I get a freebie with each issue, and since that is six times a week my free embellishments quickly mount up. The newsletter has layout samples, tips and frequent tutorials, so in the current climate of price increases and salary decreases it’s a winning combination for any scrapper.
Sample Layout with Sketch 31
December 2, 2009 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment
Our sample layout using sketch 31 shows photos from three 21st birthday celebrations – all for the same lucky guy!
Isabella said, “As my husband travelled a lot when the children were at school we would have family celebrations on the Sunday nearest each birthday so we could all celebrate together. Although he was no longer doing this by the time 21st birthdays came around, the children were off at college or working, so we kept the tradition of special family celebrations on Sundays. So celebrating with family, celebrating on the actual day with those family members around, and celebrating with friends at a local restaurant were all part of the fun. Oh, and there was another with friends at college, but I don’t have any photos from that one, lol!”
Scrapbooking Your Traditions
July 8, 2009 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment

Tradition is important in all cultures, and it’s good to make sure you have some layouts that cover the traditions you celebrate. Scrapbooking YOUR traditions, whether it’s cultural or family traditions, summer, wedding or church traditions, will remind your children of why something is important to you and your family. Passing on the message or the story helps keep it alive.
Tradition means to ‘pass time-honored customs, beliefs, stories and songs from one generation to another ‘. As you can imagine, that can encompass a lot of things from deeply held beliefs, to a style of dress, to family folklore, some of which goes back hundreds and even thousands of generations. Even superstitions can run in families and cultures.
Tradition is to hand over, deliver or entrust, often of one’s faith. Tradition is a set of practices, a way of doing things.
So what type of things make up a tradition?
And if I don’t have any, can I make some?
Scrapbooking Layout with Sketch 26: Generations
June 23, 2009 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment
Creating a layout with scrapbooking sketch #26 was a great opportunity to show the proud new Mummy & Daddy with their first child, surrounded by their own loving parents. (Told you we’d get lots of baby layouts from Isabella for a while!)
“A mild & sunny day was a pleasant surprise in mid February so soon after the heavy snow that covered the ground at Emily’s birth,” says Isabella. “So, to take advantage of the sunshine, and making sure the baby was well snuggled in her new shawl, the camera was set up on a tripod for a few shots in the garden.”
There is no journaling on this layout other than the title, ‘generations’, the sub-title, ‘Parents, Children, Grandchildren’, and the words ‘loved’ and ‘blessed’ summing up how the families feel.
Read on for a closer look at this simple, uncluttered layout, some tips on how Isabella made her photo frame, and where to find a whole matching collection of free digital scrapbooking supplies to try for yourself.
Scrapbooking Sketch #26
June 11, 2009 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment

Our scrapbooking sketch for June uses 5 photographs, with a focus on one and allowing the other four to supplement the story.
As usual, there are many ways to interpret a scrapbooking sketch and it’s always exciting to see the various ideas people come up with. I often find myself saying, “Wow, I never thought of that!”
The background in this sketch leaves a lot to your imagination. Fill it or leave the ‘white space’ for two very different looks.
We have more layout variations below, including some two-page spreads for you to try this month.

Scrapbooking Sketch #24
February 16, 2009 by Genie Balfour · Leave a Comment

I find it exciting to start a new layout with a scrapbooking sketch. It always gets me off the mark more quickly than sitting with just a few photos and scrapbook supplies.
This new sketch includes 3 papers, 1 photo, ribbon and journaling block (or it could be another photo, if you prefer.) There’s a title block and one or two positions that could be a sub-title and journaling, or a quote. Try it and see how you get on.
The sketch will turn easily should you want to try a different perspective. See below for some variations, then choose the one that suits your purpose best.

We have another super fast Christmas gift idea for you. Not only can you download the product and start making it within minutes, but it will be finished in no time, too. That’s what we said, super fast!
As Christmas gets closer we all feel the pressure so think there’s no time now to make gifts – we’ll have to buy.
That’s where digital scrapbooking products come in to their own, with a gift you can make quickly, yet looks like you’ve spent days over it
This easy calendar, the 2009 8.5×11 Calendar Easy Page Pro from Scrap Girls, is all ready for you just to drop your photographs into place and it’s done.
So the idea of such a great gift as this fun, cheery and bright calendar is very welcome. Yes?
…
How do you hold the pages together?
If you’re like me you probably already have dozens of book rings and ribbons to hand. These are so simple to use.
Or maybe you’ve got a Bind-It-All tool on your Christmas list and plan to make calendars as New Years gifts for family and friends. Or take it to your local copy or printer store to bind. Many have professional wire binding systems (similar to the Bind-it-all) and will quickly bind your calendars.
It’s an 8.5×11 scrapbook page design, and there are twelve easy pages, one for each month of the year. It’s designed by Angie Briggs one of Scrap Girls professional designers. You simply slide your own photograph behind the page and position to your liking in the window.
And once made, you can print off as many copies as you require of each page to make multiple calendars in one fell swoop!

Nothng could be simpler and yet so professional as these easy calendar pages to make super fast Christmas gifts. Sit back and wait for the compliments.
